The applicant must have completed a Master’s degree study program in the given or related area of studies applied to (for list of accredited fields click here), and successfully pass an entrance examination. The exam consists of a specialized colloquium in the given field, and proof of the ability to communicate in at least one world language. REGISTRATION Registration for studies – students of all classes are required to appear for registration at the specified time: 1st year students in July of that year, and other students (2nd year and higher) at the specified times (during the month of September. Each student will submit an individual study plan (ISP) developed (in cooperation with his advisor) for the upcoming academic year, and evaluation by the advisor of the year since the last registration (does not apply to 1st year students). Students are required to register all subjects into the Information System (IS) within the specified period; that is, observe the dates for registering for subjects for the autumn and spring semesters (schedule for academic year). Later registration is possible through the DSP office only. Changes in the ISP during the course of the year may be made only with the agreement of the advisor – the student submits all changes to the original plan in writing, with signature of advisor, before registration or at latest by registration for following year. The student will fulfil his or her study responsibilities for the entire academic year (Regulations for Studies and Examinations, Student Rights and Responsibilities). PERIOD OF STUDIES The standard period for studies in the presentation form is 4 years. The plan of studies of each student is recorded in the study records of the IS. Studies in the program are carried out according to the ISP, the main part of which is systematic, creative research within the topic of the dissertation work. Study is under way of credit system (ECTS), where each student must obtain at least 20 credits to be signed into next semestr, or 45 credits in two last semesters. Students, who have done state doctoral exam, register only one subject called Ph.D. thesis with minimum 15 credits. Study responsibilities consist of passing courses and seminars, expanding and deepening knowledge of the wider issues of the particular branch of science to the extent specified by the department academic council, and preparation and assistance in teaching in the Bachelor’s and Master’s study programs. Students are required to lecture on the results of their research at least once a year at a recognized forum in a form determined by the advisor. The form of the thesis and dissertation work (the content of which is usually research in the literature, a basic statement of intent, and planned methods of resolving the research task to be undertaken, its expected benefits and results are determined by the academic council. The thesis is intended for department use, and is not submitted to the office of R&D. FOREIGN STUDIES AND POSTINGS When a student decides to spend study time abroad, he informs (in writing, with the agreement of their advisor) the department of their DSP of the length and location of stay; also in writing, or at least electronically, he will give notice of the date of his return. Students who carry out part of their studies abroad need a certificate (or authorized transcript) from the foreign partner, who will send it to the advisor and to the DSP. The advisor then decides what is to be recognized as having fulfilled the student’s individual study plan for that year. When studying abroad DSP students must obtain insurance for themselves. The foreign department will issue insurance cards only to employees of the FS MU, and to students only in the event that they are employed at the FS MU or have a signed, written agreement with the faculty. INTERRUPTION OF STUDIES For any decision to interrupt studies, students of both forms of study must inform the advisor in advance, and inform the DSP in writing in a letter addressed to the dean. The length of the interruption in studies is limited at max. 4 years; the fundamental principle applies, however, that the total length of studies including interruptions is 7 years (8 years for studies started in spring semester 2012 and later). Maternal leave is not counted as part of the period of interruption. COMPLETION OF STUDIES When the student fulfils all of his or her study requirements according to the ISP and Study and Examination Regulations, and has satisfied all of the other formalities (on the IS), he may submit to the DSP an application to take the state doctoral exam and defend his dissertation work (forms downloaded here). The student may take the exam and thesis defence at the same time or independently at different times. The student will agree on the form of final examination in consultation with advisor and the chairman of the department’s academic council. In order to take the state doctoral exams and the defence of dissertation work at the same time the student will submit: An application to take the state doctoral exam, signed by the student and advisor. An application to defend the student’s dissertation work, signed by the student and advisor. Proof of fulfilment of study responsibilities in the form of an IS transcript. 3 copies of the dissertation work (at least one hardbound copy). An abstract (number and form determined by the appropriate academic council) post an electronic copy of the dissertation work on the IS A brief evaluation by the advisor of the student over the full period of studies. In order to take the state doctoral exams independently the student will submit: An application to take the state doctoral exam, signed by the student and advisor Proof of fulfilment of study responsibilities in form of IS transcript In order to undertake the defence of dissertation work independently, the student will submit: An application for defence of dissertation work, signed by the student and advisor 3 copies of the dissertation work (at least one hardbound copy). The only exceptions are the geological sciences, where for organizational reasons there are two deadlines for submitting applications for the state doctoral exam and defence of dissertation work (in the spring by 15.3, and in the fall by 30.10 of that year). After successfully passing the state doctoral exams and defence of dissertation work, the student is granted the title Ph. D. The graduate receives a certificate of successful completion of studies, the DSP department at the FS MU issues a diploma and transcript, and passes it to the dept. of R&D at the MU Rectorate. Official presentation. Diplomas and certificates are officially presented to graduates of DSP studies by officials of Masaryk University. Ceremonies are usually held twice a year, usually in June and in November or December. Exact dates are posted by the MU rectorate).
