Laboratory of Environmental Microbiology

The research of the laboratory of environmental microbiology focuses on the study of various aspects of microbial activity and their interaction with the environment. Our research projects concentrate on the detection, characterization, description and utilization of bacterial taxa with high potential for degradation of environmental pollutants. Classical cultivation methods, as well as chemo taxonomical and molecular biological methods are used for identification of degradative bacteria. One of methods used in the laboratory for direct identification of bacteria is MALDI-TOF. This technique is used for identification of bacteria from environmental samples, but also human pathogens, production strains in food industry and probiotic bacteria; it also contributed to the discovery of two novel species Pseudomonas moraviensis and Pseudomonas vranovensis. Besides this method, fingerprint methods like DGGE are used for determination of microbial diversity in various environmental samples. Theoretical knowledge is used for collaboration with companies involved in the decontamination business and mainly with the Research Institute of Brewing and Malting for characterization of commercial strains of brewery yeasts.
